The Japan Foundation Toronto is hiring a new library assistant and that person could be you!
The Library Assistant is a full-time position for a period of one (1) year, renewable up to three (3) years. The successful candidate will be able to perform basic library tasks, as well as offer her/his research skills and knowledge of Japanese culture to assists patrons looking for specific information about Japan. He/she will also be available to work flexible hours, including some evenings and Saturdays.

The Japan Foundation is an organization promoting cultural exchange between Japan and other countries in order to advance international mutual understanding. The Japan Foundation, Toronto is one of 22 overseas offices, offering programs grouped under three main areas: Japanese-Language Education, Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange, and Arts and Cultural Exchange.
A part of the Japan Foundation Toronto is the library which maintains a collection of 23,000 Japan-related print and audiovisual materials in English, Japanese and French, emphasizing language study, art, literature, history and culture.
Library Assistant Responsibilities
– Circulation control using the EOS integrated library system.
– Circulation and Reference service at the circulation counter
– Cataloging of materials mainly using OCLC
– Preparing materials for circulation
– Assisting the Chief Librarian in acquisition of new materials
– Preparing monthly statistical reports, using Excel
– Preparing library material displays and seasonal cultural displays
– Preparing and coordinating events in the library
– Training and coordinating library volunteers
– Preparing thematic lists of books corresponding to events in the Foundation
– Overseeing the library during an absence of the Chief Librarian
– Assisting the Chief Librarian and counter staff in other office administration tasks
– Supporting other events organized by the Japan Foundation, Toronto
Requirements
– Native fluency in spoken and written English, with superior writing skills
– Availability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and Saturdays.
– Fluency in spoken and reading Japanese skill
– Comprehensive knowledge of Japanese culture (a degree in East Asian Studies or Japanese Studies
will be an asset)
– Experience working/volunteering in a library preferable
– Strong computer proficiency (MS Office suite, Windows. Experience with integrated library systems,
current web technologies and standards and new media technologies will be an asset)
– Excellent research skills
– Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
– Strong organizational and time management skills
-Possess legal status necessary to work in Canada, such as Citizenship or Permanent resident.
Required Education
– University degree or college diploma
– Information Studies degree is desirable
