Even a distinct lack of cherry blossoms wasn’t going to stop JETAA from going to High Park to enjoy a sakura(-less) hanami picnic!

An up-and-down April put the deep freeze on cherry blossoms in 2016 (only about 5% of them bloomed in High Park this year!?!), but JETAA once again joined with the good folks at the Japan Canada Student Association at the University of Toronto for an afternoon of food, friends, family, and fun.  The first spat of beautiful weather all year helped to bring more than 100 people out to enjoy spring vibes over the Victoria Day long weekend.

You’ve seen us rock climbing, curling, and even axe throwing, but did you know we also play a mean board game? That’s right. JETAA Toronto is into board games. Who would have guessed it, right?

Now, whether or not we’re actually any good at any of them is another story, but thanks to this past month’s JETAA board games event, we finally had a chance to put our skills to the test.

It was a balmy mid-April afternoon up in Koreatown by Christie Station. With a healthy dose of spring both in the air and in our collective step, a group of JETAA Toronto members and guests scaled up a good time at this year’s annual rock climbing event.

On Wednesday March 9th, approximately 100 people showed up at Toronto’s Revue Cinema to see the Canadian premiere of Tohoku Tomo; a documentary about the volunteers who came to Japan’s aid after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that devastated the prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima, and Iwate on March 11, 2011.

This year’s annual JETAA Toronto Midnight Curling took place on Saturday, February 20th. With a cool demeanour and a sweeping air of fabulousness, over 20 JETs – with friends in tow – enjoyed a fine set of refreshments at Loons Restaurant & Pub before heading out to the High Park Curling Club to rock out on the curling rink! As this was our fifth year playing at the club, we would like to thank them for hosting us once again.  (more…)

JETAA Toronto members gathered for the 2016 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, January 30th at The Fox and Fiddle in Toronto. The AGM is a chance for the chapter’s membership to hear about the year in review, how the year’s funding was allocated, discuss and vote on any changes to the bylaws (no changes for 2016/2017), and of course, elect new officers to the executive committee. Back by popular demand, JETAA teamed up with Secret Teatime and hosted two back-to-back pottery workshop sessions on Saturday, Dec 5th and Sunday, Dec 6th.  Since this is the 3rd year running this event, we were happy to see a mix of new and returning participants. (more…)
