Well, the new year is rolling forward. No sakura to speak of here in Toronto, but at least it was a sunny afternoon when we conglomerated out in front of Guu Izakaya for our first event of the year. They had cracked the windows open and we could hear the staff going through their daily specials before opening the doors to greet us with an enthusiastic and oh-so-nostalgic irashaimase!
JETAA Toronto survived 2 hours of ice and guiness at our annual curling midnight madness! Combining the best in sport and intercultural drinking holidays, 40 of our bravest members and friends took to the ice for a night of hollering, sweeping, “skipping”, and deftly maintaining our balance and our draw weight at our 6th annual JETAA Midnight Curling Bonspiel at the High Park Club on March 17th 2018. In the dark of night (okay, after work), in a lonely dojo situated in a quiet countryside (fine, downtown Toronto at dinnertime!), seven ninjas-in-training gathered. The doors shut. They were locked in! Too late, they realized this was no straightforward mission, nor a decisive battle against a rival clan, it was a test! Could they work together, strangers and friends to find the headbands and secret scrolls that would mark them as fully fledged ninja? (more…)
A handful of JETAA members met up on February 25 to explore the Bloor Yorkville Icefest. Despite the balmy weather (10 degrees!), we saw slightly melted ice sculptures, enjoyed maple taffy, and watched an ice carving display. This year’s theme was ‘Medieval Times’ and we saw ice sculptures of castles and knights. Booths featured knights, jesters, Vikings and kings. Afterward, we enjoyed a warm drink and a stroll along Bloor Street. (more…)
Approaching Valentine’s Day, we got a little cheesy, going to Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Angel Cafe. Taking a break from responsible dinner choices for this Gochisou event, we gorged on desserts instead! (more…)
