Toasting to the Success of JETAA’s First Career Roundtable
On Thursday, November 7th, JETAA held its first ever career roundtable and it was received well indeed.
JETAA and guests spent the evening at the Japan Foundation first by listening to the background stories of 9 industry professionals and how they were successful in entering their chosen career paths. (more…)
It was a cold, dreary and rainy night, not to mention the strangest evening in the year when cosplay characters and kabuki devils are free to wonder the streets of Toronto. Yes, it was Hajjjoween! The event that for some reason has triple J’s, perhaps representing the level of Japaneseness. If this is the case, then it should really be ‘Hajjjjjoween’, as the event was a multi-lateral concoction, brewed from the minds of JAVA, Japanada, JCSA, CJA, and JETAA.
On Oct. 19th, JETAA hosted its annual re-entry conference at the Japanese Consulate. Sticking with traditions, after the conference many recently returned JETs along with other JETAA members headed over to Elephant and Castle on King for the Nijikai.

The Consulate-General of Japan welcomed back newly returned JETs with a reception at the Consul-General’s residence on Friday, October 18th.
In addition to the returning JETs, guests included some JETAA executive team members, Consulate staff, and various members of the Toronto Japanese business and arts communities.
Welcome Back Returning JETs
On Saturday, September 14th JETAA members welcomed back returning JETs by eating a tasty dinner along with plenty to drink at Don Don Izakaya on Dundas Street West. The returners Izakaya night was a great way for those JETs coming back to Canada to mingle with their sempai and discuss many things, from reintegrating back into Canadian culture to reverse culture shock.
To all of the newly departed 2013 JETs,

As a consequence, I had missed all the pre-departure activities. The Farewell Reception of 2008 was the only pre-departure activity I attended. I spoke zero Japanese. I had no teaching experience. Actually, I’m not sure what the selection committee saw in me as a candidate. I was genki but felt completely unprepared. Everyone else around me was far into their Japanese lessons. Many seemed to have been to Japan before. Some have even previously taught overseas. (more…)
