A Boat Cruise To Remember

July 10th was a perfect summer evening to sail by the Toronto skyline. That’s exactly what dozens of JETAA members did along with members of JAVA and CJS, coming together for an awesome summer boat cruise. The sold out evening with over 250 Canadian and Japanese participants included two floors of talented DJs and well stocked bars.

The photo-worthy sunset over the lake perfectly complimented the bright yukatas that dotted the boat.

Manju and Mochi 101

The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) is located just off the Don Valley Parkway at Wynford Drive. After a stop-and-go ride through post-work traffic, my mom and I arrive a few minutes late for Chef Shoji’s manju and mochi workshop at the JCCC. We sneak into the class as he demonstrates how to mix a paste for dorayaki – a red bean stuffed pancake. He shows us his kitchen tools – two heavy iron skillets with nine circular holes, branding irons with kanji characters. He drops the dorayaki mix made with flour, baking powder, eggs, milk, sugar, soya sauce, and mirin into the iron skillet. He has bent the length of his measuring spoon so that it hooks over his mixing bowl. When bubbles form on one side, he lifts up the pancake with a knife and flips them onto a hot tray to cook the other side. Chef Shoji is a retired auto mechanic who brings a methodical approach from his years of fixing cars to fixing up desserts. There is a tool for everything, he instructs us, and if there isn’t you have to make one.

Consulate-General Of Japan Needs Volunteers

The Consulate-General of Japan needs volunteers to assist the Japan Booth at the Harbourfront Centre. The Fortune Cooking Food Festival will be held August 12-14.

What we will be doing:
*Participate in the Mikoshi (portable shrine) Parade wearing a Happi coat (Happis will be supplied by the Consulate office). The Harbourfront Centre will inform us of the parade route/schedule shortly. There will be a Lion Dance (Shishi-mai) too.
*Distribute Japan Tourism information at the booth (handing out materials on tourism to Japan).
*Setup and take down of the Japan booth.

Work hours:
*Friday, August 12, 16:30-23:30 (to be confirmed). Saturday, Aug.13, 12:30-23:30. Sunday, Aug.14, 12:30-18:30. We will be able to provide a small honorarium.

Invitation Programme Of JET Alumni To Disaster Stricken Areas In Tohoku

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Tourism Agency are inviting JET Alumni to participate in an Invitation Programme to Visit Disaster Stricken Areas in Tohoku.

Interested alumni must have worked for two or more years as a CIR or ALT in Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture or Sendai City.

The application deadline is July 11, 2011.

Hanami In High Park A Success!

The breathtaking cherry blossoms and beautiful weather were in perfect harmony for JETAA Toronto’s 5th Annual Hanami Picnic in High Park on Saturday, May 7th. Thanks to the support of members from U of T’s JCSA and JAVA, there were over 150 people in attendance throughout the day.

Our group arrived early enough to lay down the large blue tarps and claim our territory in what was undoubtedly one of the best spots in High Park for prime cherry blossom viewing. Beneath the picturesque flowers, everyone enjoyed a potluck-style meal, which featured an array of food, drinks and popular Japanese snacks.

Rock Climbing on a Rainy Saturday

On Saturday, April 16, 13 brave JETAA members and friends set out in the pouring rain to Toronto Rock Climbing Academy for a three-hour climbing session.

With most of the group having never climbed before, the morning started with a beginner lesson in harnesses, knot-tying, carabiners, GRIGRIs and proper belay form.
